Should You Become a Google Apps Administrator?
Google Apps is not a complicated software. However, it does have a bit of a learning curve. While some users may be proficient at spreadsheets, they may not be as proficient at slideshows. Others may not know how to navigate the Google+ interface or why they would even want to do so.
Becoming a Google Apps Administrator can help bridge the gap between those unfamiliar with all of the features of Google Apps for Work. It will require you to learn all of the components but anytime you learn a new skill it gives you an advantage. Especially when the skill you learn is in demand.
The great part about becoming an admin is that you can do so at your own pace. Google has training for admins and even has a certification program. It is usually much easier to find a job for a particular skill when you can state that you passed the certification. Since Google runs the certification program, they know what skills are needed for admins to possess.
What kinds of skills will be needed? As an admin, you will need to be able to create and delete users as well as grant access using System Roles. When deleting users, you will need to determine what to do with existing objects for that user.
You also will need to learn about what Google calls an Organizational Unit. This gives you the ability to manage security and other aspects of users and groups. Sharing rights is also a major aspect of this feature. This is especially important when dealing with Google Calendar, which teams use to schedule resources within an organization.
While it’s not imperative to become certified as an admin, it can force you to learn concepts that you may not have learned from normal day-to-day operations. When you prepare for the certification test, you will need to become familiar with all of the concepts. This is why it’s a good idea to take a course for certification which Google does offer.
More businesses are jumping on the Google Apps bandwagon which can only mean good opportunities for Google Apps admins. This is a skill that can be used to get hired or you can use that as a basis for branching out with your own consulting business. Either way, the need for this skill is projected to grow.
